CREDIT RATING OF WILLIAMS COMPANIES REDUCED TO JUNK

The credit rating of the Williams Companies, a leading pipeline concern, was reduced to BB, or junk status, by Standard & Poor's because less cash is available to the company. The senior unsecured debt was lowered two levels from BBB-, S.& P. said. Williams's failure to renew its $2.2 billion revolving loan is ''not commensurate with an investment-grade rating,'' S. &P. said. The drop in Williams's stock price, along with a cut in its dividend, reduces the company's ability to sell shares to raise cash and pay off debt, S.& P. said.
