Increasingly, Reporters Say They're Democrats

A survey released yesterday of 1,400 journalists nationwide showed that those perceptions of reporters' political sympathies may be even more accurate than the critics thought. And the study reopened an old debate about whether reporters do -- or should -- bring their biases to work.

Pittsburgh Paper in Accord

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the teamsters' union reached a tentative labor agreement today, putting within reach a settlement of an extremely bitter labor dispute that has halted publication of Pittsburgh's two daily newspapers for 187 days. Management and union leaders would not release details of the contract until after the newspaper reached agreement with nine other unions whose contracts expired last year. But both sides were optimistic that those negotiations would go relatively smoothly.

Heating Oil Prices Tumble On News of Ample Supplies

Heating oil for delivery in December tumbled yesterday to its lowest level since early March, in reaction to further evidence that winter supplies are ample. After the close of trading on Tuesday, the American Petroleum Institute said United States distillate stocks, which include heating oil, jet kerosene and diesel fuel, rose by 2.7 million barrels in the week ended Nov. 13 to 138.4 million barrels.

A Ratings Cut For Prudential

Standard & Poor's lowered its ratings by a notch yesterday on $3.15 billion of bonds from the Prudential Insurance Company of America, making it more expensive for the biggest insurance company in the United States to borrow money. The downgrade, to AA+ from the top AAA rating, signifies a higher risk is associated with owning Prudential debt and that means the Newark company may be forced to offer higher interest rates in the future to attract investors.

ZENITH REPORTS CABLE-TV BREAKTHROUGH

The Zenith Electronics Corporation, Glenview, Ill., said it had developed a digital modulation technology that could double the amount of information sent over cable-television channels. Zenith said it was in talks with unidentified computer hardware and cable companies about the breakthrough, which would send two digital high-definition television signals over one cable channel.

TW HOLDINGS COMPLETES RECAPITALIZATION PLAN

TW Holdings Inc. said it had completed a recapitalization plan that gave two partnerships controlled by the buyout firm of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Company a 47.2 percent stake in the company in exchange for a $300 million investment. Under the agreement, the partnerships purchased 100 million newly issued TW Holdings common shares, plus warrants to purchase 75 million additional shares at $3.50 each. TW Holdings operates more than 2,000 Denny's, Hardee's, Quincy's and El Pollo Loco restaurants.

OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE PLANS MORE RESTAURANTS

Outback Steakhouse, a Tampa, Fla., operator of casual dining restaurants, said it planned to open 50 to 60 restaurants in 1993. Outback had said in September that it wouldopen 12 to 15 restaurants each quarter. About half of the planned openings would be company-owned outlets, while 20 would be franchises and five would be joint ventures, Bob Merritt, Outback's chief financial officer, said. Outback now has 79 restaurants, 49 of which are company-owned, 15 of which are franchised and 15 that are joint ventures.

MCDONNELL CUTS PRODUCTION ON TWO MODELS

Faced with continued weakness in the market for new passenger jets, the McDonnell Douglas Corporation said yesterday that it would cut output of two models, the MD-80 and MD-11, next year and delay developing a third, the MD-95. McDonnell has borne the brunt of a price war that has caused huge losses at major airlines. The airlines responded by cutting spending on planes. In 1992, McDonnell expects to deliver 90 of its smaller MD-80 jets and 43 of its MD-11 wide bodies. But the St. Louis aerospace manufacturer reported that negotiations with bank lenders had progressed: the company received permission to sell assets and moved forward in efforts to obtain a new $400 million credit line.
