Associates of Vice Pres Agnew say on Sept 30 that his denunciation of Justice Dept for its conduct of criminal investigation against him was product of wks of having dwelt 'on dark side of an inferno'; describe origins of Agnew's attack; say Agnew deliberated on Sept 29 at entertainer F Sinatra's estate about whether to end long period of private consternation by openly criticizing Govt's handling of case; Agnew, later that day and following prepared speech to Natl Federation of Repub Women, accused Asst Atty Gen Petersen of having selected him as 'big trophy' with which to recoup reputation lost through 'ineptness of his Watergate investigation and stated that he would not resign if indicted; associates say proximate cause of Agnew's wrath was Sept 28 Justice Dept statement that there was no basis for charge by Agnew's attys that dept officials had leaked information to press in effort to prejudice proceedings against Vice Pres and suggested that Agnew precipitated leaks by disclosing on Aug 8 that he was under investigation; say Agnew regrets his omission of 1 point that troubled him--published speculation that he sought to make deal with prosecutors, offering to resign if charges were dropped--and that he later wished he had denied those accts on TV
