Shackleton's account of his expedition to within sight of the south pole has been made somewhat of a mystery, but it is now resolved, and the publisher, the J.B. STAMFORD, Conn., Sept. 30. -- The cable carried joyful news to-day to Miss Ethel Roosevelt, the daughter of Col. Roosevelt, who is in Europe with her mother. The message told her that Ace, her pet bull terrier, was back at the Oyster Bay home of the Roosevelts, safe and sound.

The remark of the Duke of ORLEANS that the dash to the north pole is a "good sporting feat" reminds us that the Duke himself is something of an arctic explorer. We do not exactly recall now what he ever did in the frozen North, but he does not think much of discovering the north pole the way PEARY discovered it.

Pay Inspector Samuel McGowan of the Atlantic fleet, a cotillion leader of parts, and one of the most popular officers in the navy, was detailed yesterday and ordered to South Carolina to duty at the Charleston Navy Yard. The going of "Sam," as every other officer in the fleet calls him, was made the occasion of a demonstrative send-off by his brother officers last night.
