STAMFORD, Conn., Sept. 30. -- The cable carried joyful news to-day to Miss Ethel Roosevelt, the daughter of Col. Roosevelt, who is in Europe with her mother. The message told her that Ace, her pet bull terrier, was back at the Oyster Bay home of the Roosevelts, safe and sound.

Pay Inspector Samuel McGowan of the Atlantic fleet, a cotillion leader of parts, and one of the most popular officers in the navy, was detailed yesterday and ordered to South Carolina to duty at the Charleston Navy Yard. The going of "Sam," as every other officer in the fleet calls him, was made the occasion of a demonstrative send-off by his brother officers last night.
