April Tool Orders Fell

Orders for machine tools decreased an estimated 22 percent in April, an industry survey showed today. April orders from United States companies for domestic and foreign-produced machine tools fell to $450 million from a revised $577 million in March, the Association for Manufacturing Technology said. Tool orders were higher in the first four months of this year than the same period last year. Orders rose 9 percent through April, to $1.87 billion.

Magazines Expect 12% Rise in Ad Revenue

Magazine publishers expect advertising revenue to increase by 12 or 13 percent this year despite the decline of many online companies and softness in some other categories, the trade journal Advertising Age said in its current issue. According to the report, many magazine executives and media buyers say that a strong economy is pushing advertising spending higher than the increase of 8 percent to 9 percent they had expected. Automobile companies have spent the most on advertising so far in 2000, $512 million, followed by technology, telecommunications and communications networking systems businesses, the magazine said.

New I.B.M. Laptop to Use Linux

I.B.M. said today that it would introduce a portable computer that runs the Linux operating system, bolstering support for the system, which competes with Microsoft's Windows. The ThinkPad notebook from I.B.M., the world's largest computer maker, will come with Linux software from Caldera Systems Inc. starting in the third quarter. I.B.M. also will spend $6 million this year to help software developers create applications that run on Linux.

Prudential of Britain Set To Sell Shares in Egg Bank

Prudential P.L.C., Britain's second-largest insurer, said today that it planned to raise about $:235 million, or $355 million, selling shares in its Egg Internet bank at 160 pence each, near the top end of its range. Prudential is selling about 20 percent of Egg in an initial public offering that values the online bank at more than $:1.3 billion, or $2 billion. Egg will receive $:150 million from selling 147 million shares, while Prudential will receive $:86 million.
